    Great video. But with natural diamond v synthetic diamond, you say that 100% of synthetic diamonds do not absorb UV light. But I thought lab grown diamonds can fluoresce under UV light? (which presumably means they must absorb UV light). What have I not understood?

Of course how much time a child or teenager should spend on jewellery making as a hobby, with or without financial incentives, is a matter of discussion and arragement within the family. I absolutely love this video! Awesome job explaining everything. I am a beginner, so naturally I have a silly question. When you bow the ring shank wires does it change the initial size of the ring you measured for. It seems like it would. Would I need to go up a size when measuring wire for my shank? Thank you so much for this tutorial!

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg 4 місяці тому

      Hello and thank you enjoying the video, I hope you will have a chance to make you very own ring For the ring size the most important thing is to use the chart which has been devised so as to get the size to fit perfectly. You need to know 1. what wire gauge you are using (usually 18g is a very good and sturdy thickness) 2. Your fingersize in USA measurement (there are lots of countries using their own measurements and the chart works really well for USA sizes.) With these two things the ring size will be perfect. How it works is to select the right ring size from the left hand column and match it to the gauge from the top row. This produces a length which works perfectly every time: i.imgur.com/Qet7mTe.png Say my size was size 6 US and I am working with 18 ga so the length of 18ga wire to fit around the finger will be 54.6mm long. Since it is hard to measure to the 10th of a mm we can round to the nearest 1/2 mm. (We can measure 54.5 this would work as 0.1 of a mm will make little difference. So always round up or down to the nearest 1/2mm.) If your finger size is 5 1/2 you need to take the size 5 result and the size 6 result, and average them out. 52.1 + 54.6 = 106.7 / 2 = 53.35 so I would round this to 53.5mm. Hope this helps and would love to see how your ring turns out Best wishes, Tanja

    Dear mam Can I start my career in jewelry as I am 40 years old

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg 5 місяців тому

      Hi! Yes you can definitely start a new career in jewellery after 40 years old or even later. At JDMIS here in Singapore, we have trained over 5,000 graduates and the majority of whom are actually mid career professionals in their late 30 or 40s. Many of them only discover their passion and confidence to start something in jewellery after getting tired with their 9-5 office job. You can do too! For the first step, I would recommend checking out some starter Certificate course here at JDMIS' online learning platform? learn.jdmis.edu.sg/all-courses/

    Question...i got a ruby that has a meduim dark tone in outdoor/diffused lighting but when indoors it has a medium tone ( no distinction). how is the tone defined in the trade? or is this one of those "gray zones" not well defined phenomenon that is determoned differently by different "experts" ?

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg 5 місяців тому

      Hello and Happy New Year! When properly grading in a lab, tone it is divided into 10 categories from 1 to 10. Graders in labs who have practice grading the tone can distinguish between the different nuances but anyone else who does not practice this daily, and looks at tone infrequently, is best to divide into just three (or 5) categories such as: Light, (light to medium), Medium, (medium to dark), and Dark. It is not so much a gray area but rather something impossible to distinguish without the proper training and practice. Can there be different results by different labs?? (Is the next question most people ask) YES, Lots of different labs do have different methods and sometimes they do not all get the same results. If it is high quality, best thing to do is to have the gem graded by a well recognized and reputable lab. Hope this helps! - Tanja

    Hello, good day and happy new year, you know, I have a 10.14 carat Myanmar Ruby with sub-transparent inclusions with an untreated half tone Certified by genuine GRS and I am a collector, I have had this ruby for years and I am trying to sell it in my area. but they tell me that it is a very valuable piece and it is very expensive for them to sell it in jewelry stores in these areas since they only deal in diamonds and I do not know its value

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg 5 місяців тому

      Hello and Happy New Year to you too! A 10+ ct untreated Ruby is very special and of great value. "Very expensive in your area?" Where is the area you are trying to sell this? We are in Singapore where there is reasonable demand for such special things. I would probably best advise you to first go to some good, high-end jewellers and show them the gem with the view to selling it and get several quotes from the various places. This should give you a ball park figure on what they would be willing to pay. If you are not comfortable to ask the jewellers the price for the gem in view of selling it, you could pretend you want to make two rings for each of your daughters. Show them the Ruby and say that you only have one but need to find another of similar size, shape, quality and value and let them give you a quote for what they can find. This might at least get you an up to date selling price!Also you could approach an auction house like Sotheby's, Christies or Bonhams. Since the gem does have a cert this might be a good place to find other collectors. I do hope this helps and wish you all the very best in your quest. - Tanja Sadow.

    Where should I sell the gem when I have it ? I mean how can find a genuine buyer?

    • @JdmisEduSg
      @JdmisEduSg 5 місяців тому

      Today with the quantity of synthetics on the market most genuine gem buyers are likely to go and buy from a reputable jeweller. Many gem buyers have had disappointing experiences with on-line shopping and would be skeptical to buy high value items this way. Here in Asia most people who want to sell their gems or jewellery will go to a pawn broker. It is not great as they retrieve a fraction of what the true value of the jewellery is but, on the other hand, it is possible to get some value in an immediate timeframe which otherwise would not be possible. Any other way will take much longer to find the right person who can sell it for you or will take it on consignment until they can actually sell it. Some people work with their local jewellers who may help out but its a bit like asking someone to buy a second hand clothing item with the only difference that it is more valuable. Loose gems would be much easier to sell than finished jewellery as when trends change and old designs go out of style it becomes even more challenging to find the person who will love the old style. Where are you from? - Tanja

      Hi! The fiber brick we use here is made of compressed vermiculite. But you can get the same result from ceramic firing bricks as well. I'm not sure where you're located, but if you're buying from the US you might like to try cool tools. cooltools.us/products/ceramic-fiber-brick-2-1-2-x-4-x-7 Alternatively if you search Amazon you will likely find the compressed vermiculite as well. If you're based in Singapore you can always buy the fiber brick from artclay.asia - Tanja
